What We Do
We provide training in everything dog-related, from basic domestic obedience to championship level competitive sports of -
Agility, Obedience, Rally-O, Scentwork and Flygility.
These classes are taught by our volunteer members who give their time & expertise.

Dog Obedience
We provide classes for all stages of Obedience including Advanced Puppy, Domestic Obedience (all age dogs) and Competitive Obedience from beginners to advanced Champ Show levels.
Areas worked on are: Sits; Stays; Recalls; Sendaways; Attention; Lead work; Grooming and care; Socialisation and temperament.
Dog Agility
Agility is a sport based on show jumping in which a dog and handler team negotiate a series of jumps, tunnels, ramps and weave poles with the aim of finishing the course correctly and in the fastest time. Our basic Agility course teaches handling skills and introduction to the equipment. Advanced classes hone these skills and increase the level of difficulty. Agility is about having fun as well as building confidence and stimulating the mind (and body) of both dog and handler.
Canine Good Citizen
Canine Good Citizen (CGC) is a programme that tests dogs in everyday situations. It identifies and rewards dogs with the issue of Dogs NZ - endorsed qualifying certificates, Foundation, Bronze, Silver & Gold.
The purpose of the CGC programme is to ensure that our dogs can be respected and trusted members of the community because they are trained to act with good manners in the home, in public places and in the presence of other dogs and animals.

Flygility
Flygility is best described as dogs racing over a lane of small jumps and other obstacles to release and catch a ball from a spring-loaded box, then racing back to their handlers. People of all ages and abilities can compete and it is suited to all breeds of dogs, as skill is required as well as speed.
Rally-O
This is a fun way of doing Obedience with your dog without being so precise. The dog and handler complete a course designed by the Rally O judge. They proceed at their own pace through a course of stations, (10 -20, depending on the level). Each station has a sign providing instructions regarding the next skill to be performed.
Scent Work
At Southland Dog Training Club, we of course are dipping our toes into this exciting new dog sport! Come and give it a go!
